A Rainbow of Diamonds
by Charuka Abhayawickrama
Exuberating splendor and gleam, diamonds are truly a show stealer wherever they are displayed. Though famously known to be clear or colorless the variety of diamonds in the world is actually quite diverse. Color is one of the most distinctive elements of a diamond and one can expect to see these remarkable rocks in pink, blue, yellow, and several other colors. Diamonds are typically rated according to the four C's which are Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat. Every diamond can roughly be approximated a price based on the values of these 4 areas. Other characteristics also affect the price notably being the level of fluorescence of the diamond.
One other characteristic of diamonds that can affect you is whether or not the diamond has been fracture filled. Fracture filled diamonds are those that have natural cracks in them that have been filled in to give them a better appearance. Such diamonds look no different to the naked eye but are clearly noticeable under magnification. Further the value of these stones is significantly less in comparison to a similar unfilled diamond with the same 4C value.
The famous and rare Pink Diamonds are some of the most valuable in the world. The value of the pink diamond can vary heavily based on the strength or vividness of its color. In fact the Argyle mine in Australia is the most famous and common source of finding these rare gems.
But let us not forget the entire world of synthetic or manufactured diamonds which are manufactured using a variety of high pressure techniques. While diamonds manufactured this way are worth far less than their natural counterparts, they are useful for a range of other applications.
