Emeralds Are The Jewellers' Best Friends
by Steffan Suter
Emeralds are indeed fascinating gemstones, boasting the most beautiful, intense and radiant green that can possibly be imagined. Natural emeralds grow for thousands of years and take a lot of time and hard labour to discover, which makes top quality emeralds even more valuable than diamonds. From ancient times jewellers were fascinated with the radiant green colour and the royal glow of these gemstones. The name 'emerald' comes from the Greek 'smaragdos' via old French 'esmeralde', meaning a 'green gemstone'. Ancient Egyptians were the first to cut emeralds and to make rings with them, and from then on each civilisation created new framings and shapes for emerald jewellery.
Jewellers prefer to work with the traditional cut of emeralds: rectangular with square cut corners. The most common emerald ring is a centre emerald surrounded by smaller diamonds. By the way, diamonds can also be cut this way, and then they are called emerald cut diamonds.
Throughout the history emeralds have been ascribed numerous mystic qualities, some of them based on superstitions, while others supported years later by scientific research. The emerald has been associated with eyesight, and this can explain why green is considered by some to be the most relaxing colour to the eyes. In fact, there are some proofs that the Emperor Nero, who was very short-sighted used emerald slices to watch gladiators in the arena. And even now many sailors believe that a chain with an uncut emerald around the neck can protect them from drowning. Maybe this explains why emerald pendants remain so popular with jewellers and customers.
There are not so many countries that are known for their high quality emerald gemstones. Zimbabwean gemstones are considered to be the oldest emeralds in the world; some of them were already growing 2600 million years ago. Zambia, Brazil, Madagascar, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Colombia and Russia are also among the biggest emerald suppliers. Despite the considerable number of deposits and the non-stop work there it is still very hard to find a really good quality gem. Most valued by jewellers are gems of a deep, lively green with fine inclusions of other crystals. Paler stones are found more often, and are much cheaper too.
Emeralds look especially good in rings, earrings, exquisite pendants and brooches, often accompanied by smaller protective diamonds. Traditionally, all the jewellery made with naturally grown emeralds is expensive (some rings can cost more than 5000 pounds), which makes it really hard for everybody to own an emerald in their personal collection. This is why jewellers who prefer to create jewellery for ordinary people, not just Royal dynasties, have welcomed new technologies that allow growing emeralds in the scientific laboratories. These gemstones have the same qualities as the natural crystals; however they are much cheaper, which makes this type of jewellery more affordable for everybody.
Emerald green is a very popular colour this season, and the best jewellers of the world have done their best by creating collections of exquisite jewellery with naturally grown or laboratory grown emeralds.
